Information and education only

This article provides general information and education. It does not provide individual advice or replace assessment, diagnosis or care from a qualified professional. The information is not exhaustive and should be understood in its cultural and local context.

About the source and review

Adapted and abridged from educational manuscripts by Bineta Gueye Thiam. Current public sources were checked on 13 October 2026 for this web edition. These editorial checks are not an independent clinical review; no clinical reviewer is claimed for this edition.

ALS is a form of motor neurone disease affecting nerve cells involved in muscle movement. Progressive muscle weakness can affect mobility, speaking, swallowing and breathing. It affects adults and is not limited to older age.

Understanding experiences

The manuscript describes cramps, weakness and changing support needs. Progression varies, and these symptoms can also occur for other reasons. Diagnosis requires specialist assessment.

Support and care

There is no cure, but treatments and coordinated care can help. Care needs may include breathing and swallowing support, communication aids, mobility equipment and emotional support. Decisions should reflect the person’s wishes. The source emphasises practical help and connection with others. Severe breathing difficulty or choking requires emergency medical help.
