Grief and loss
Information and education only
This article provides general information and education. It does not provide individual advice or replace assessment, diagnosis or care from a qualified professional. The information is not exhaustive and should be understood in its cultural and local context.
About the source and review
Adapted and abridged from educational manuscripts by Bineta Gueye Thiam. Current public sources were checked on 13 October 2026 for this web edition. These editorial checks are not an independent clinical review; no clinical reviewer is claimed for this edition.
Grief is a natural response to losing someone important. Sadness, anger, loneliness, tiredness and changes in sleep or appetite can occur. People grieve differently; grief itself is not automatically a mental disorder.
Everyday experiences
The source manuscript emphasises listening without judgment and offering practical help. Talking with someone trusted, taking time for comforting activities and receiving support from family or community can be helpful. Support should respect the person’s wishes and cultural context.
Support and care
When distress makes daily life difficult, a qualified health professional can help assess what support is needed. There is no single timetable everyone must follow.
Urgent help
If someone is in immediate danger, has seriously harmed themselves or cannot stay safe, seek urgent medical help through local emergency services or the nearest emergency department.
