This article provides general information and education. It does not provide individual advice or replace assessment, diagnosis or care from a qualified professional. The information is not exhaustive and should be understood in its cultural and local context.

About the source and review

Adapted from educational texts by Bineta Gueye Thiam for WASSOR in 2023. The project log records a professional review of the source collection in January 2023. Some archived files were subsequently edited, and the exact reviewed revision has not been recovered. This shortened web edition has been edited for clarity; the historical record does not establish a new clinical review of this version.

Tourette syndrome involves recurrent motor and vocal tics: movements or sounds that the person does not choose to make. Tics can change in frequency and intensity over time.

Understanding tics

Motor tics involve movement, such as blinking or jumping. Vocal tics involve sounds, such as coughing or clearing the throat. Experiences differ from person to person.

Symptoms generally begin in childhood. The presence of a tic alone does not establish a diagnosis; assessment belongs with qualified professionals.

Treatment and support

The source describes behavioural therapies and medicines as approaches that may help manage tics. Decisions about treatment depend on the person’s needs and a qualified professional’s assessment.

Families and friends

The article highlights patience, compassion and space for the person to discuss feelings and concerns. Listening to their needs and supporting their participation in everyday life are central themes. The information here is general and does not recommend a particular treatment for an individual.
