About the source and review

Adapted and abridged from educational manuscripts by Bineta Gueye Thiam. Current public sources were checked on 13 October 2026 for this web edition. These editorial checks are not an independent clinical review; no clinical reviewer is claimed for this edition.

Specific learning difficulties affect particular areas of learning, such as reading, spelling or mathematics. Dyslexia and dyscalculia are examples discussed in this library. They are distinct from intellectual disability, although different conditions can coexist.

Understanding experiences

Terminology differs between countries. In UK health services, “learning disability” generally means intellectual disability. This page is limited to specific learning difficulties.

Support and care

Adapted teaching, accessible materials and individual adjustments can support participation in school, work and daily life. Assessment helps clarify a person’s strengths and needs. Difficulties should not be treated as a lack of effort, and support should involve the person concerned.
