Information and education only

This article provides general information and education. It does not provide individual advice or replace assessment, diagnosis or care from a qualified professional. The information is not exhaustive and should be understood in its cultural and local context.

About the source and review

Adapted and abridged from educational manuscripts by Bineta Gueye Thiam. Current public sources were checked on 13 October 2026 for this web edition. These editorial checks are not an independent clinical review; no clinical reviewer is claimed for this edition.

Bipolar disorder involves episodes of mania or hypomania and, depending on the pattern, depression. These are more than ordinary changes in mood. Energy, sleep, activity and thinking can be affected; the pattern differs between people.

Everyday experiences

The manuscript describes low mood and loss of interest during depression, and increased activity, irritability or risk-taking during elevated episodes. These descriptions are educational, not a diagnostic checklist.

Support and care

Care can combine medicines, psychological support and practical help. A qualified professional should assess symptoms and discuss treatment with the person. The source highlights patient listening, support with everyday tasks and involvement in care decisions. Recovery and a meaningful life are possible.

Urgent help

If someone is in immediate danger, has seriously harmed themselves or cannot stay safe, seek urgent medical help through local emergency services or the nearest emergency department.
