Information and education only

This article provides general information and education. It does not provide individual advice or replace assessment, diagnosis or care from a qualified professional. The information is not exhaustive and should be understood in its cultural and local context.

About the source and review

Adapted and abridged from educational manuscripts by Bineta Gueye Thiam. Current public sources were checked on 13 October 2026 for this web edition. These editorial checks are not an independent clinical review; no clinical reviewer is claimed for this edition.

Schizophrenia can affect perception, thinking and everyday functioning. Experiences may include hearing or seeing things others do not, fixed beliefs that persist despite evidence contradicting them, and difficulties organising thoughts. Assessment considers the whole person and other possible explanations.

Everyday experiences

The source discusses the impact on relationships and daily life. Experiences and outcomes vary. A diagnosis does not define a person’s identity or remove their right to dignity and participation.

Support and care

Care may involve medicines, psychological therapies and social support, chosen with qualified professionals and the person concerned. The manuscript encourages listening and practical support. Effective care and recovery are possible. New or distressing psychotic experiences need prompt professional assessment.

Urgent help

If someone is in immediate danger, has seriously harmed themselves or cannot stay safe, seek urgent medical help through local emergency services or the nearest emergency department.
