Dementia
Information and education only
This article provides general information and education. It does not provide individual advice or replace assessment, diagnosis or care from a qualified professional. The information is not exhaustive and should be understood in its cultural and local context.
About the source and review
Adapted and abridged from educational manuscripts by Bineta Gueye Thiam. Current public sources were checked on 13 October 2026 for this web edition. These editorial checks are not an independent clinical review; no clinical reviewer is claimed for this edition.
Dementia describes changes in memory, thinking and everyday functioning caused by diseases or injuries affecting the brain. It is not an inevitable part of ageing, and it can also affect younger adults.
Understanding experiences
The manuscript describes difficulties with communication, orientation and familiar tasks. Experiences vary with the cause and the person. Memory difficulties alone do not establish dementia; professional assessment matters.
Support and care
Support may include help with daily activities, adapted communication and care planned around the person’s preferences. Medicines and other interventions may help some symptoms, depending on the cause. The source also highlights activities the person enjoys and support for families and carers.
