Information and education only

This article provides general information and education. It does not provide individual advice or replace assessment, diagnosis or care from a qualified professional. The information is not exhaustive and should be understood in its cultural and local context.

About the source and review

Adapted from educational texts by Bineta Gueye Thiam for WASSOR in 2023. The project log records a professional review of the source collection in January 2023. Some archived files were subsequently edited, and the exact reviewed revision has not been recovered. This shortened web edition has been edited for clarity; the historical record does not establish a new clinical review of this version.

Dyspraxia can affect the planning and coordination of movements. Everyday activities such as dressing, writing, eating or moving around may be difficult or take more time.

Everyday experiences

  • Difficulty planning and carrying out movements.
  • Challenges with coordination and movement control.
  • Difficulty completing some everyday tasks.
  • Difficulties with spatial understanding or perception.

The way these difficulties affect daily life varies. An individual assessment is needed to understand a person’s needs; this article does not provide one.

Support

The source describes occupational therapy as one form of support for everyday activities and coordination. Support needs to be suited to the person and the activities they find difficult.

Families and friends

The article emphasises patience, allowing more time for tasks, and listening when the person explains what is difficult and what they need. Understanding their experience can help families and friends support participation without taking over.
