Information and education only

This article provides general information and education. It does not provide individual advice or replace assessment, diagnosis or care from a qualified professional. The information is not exhaustive and should be understood in its cultural and local context.

About the source and review

Adapted and abridged from educational manuscripts by Bineta Gueye Thiam. Current public sources were checked on 13 October 2026 for this web edition. These editorial checks are not an independent clinical review; no clinical reviewer is claimed for this edition.

PTSD can develop after a traumatic experience. Not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD. Distressing memories, nightmares, avoidance of reminders and difficulties with sleep or concentration can interfere with daily life.

Everyday experiences

The manuscript describes effects on relationships and everyday activities. These experiences need to be understood in context; a symptom list cannot establish a diagnosis. Children and adults may express distress differently.

Support and care

Professional assessment can help identify appropriate care. Psychological treatment may include trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy; treatment choices depend on individual needs. The source also highlights support from trusted people, rest and enjoyable activities. These can complement care and do not replace it.

Urgent help

If someone is in immediate danger, has seriously harmed themselves or cannot stay safe, seek urgent medical help through local emergency services or the nearest emergency department.
